It can be a drag to keep up with the daily housekeeping. But if you create some good habits it won’t take up all your time. Here are 11 habits to keep a house clean and tidy.
Make the bed first thing in the morning
Making the bed is not a waste of time. In fact, it only takes a couple of minutes but really makes a big difference in how tidy the room looks. Simplify your bedding as much as possible to make things easier. You can cut the top sheets as they mostly end up in a big puddle at the end of the bed. A washable cover and duvet is all you need. You can minimize your pillows if you don’t want to compromise on your top sheets.
Do One Load of Laundry Every Day
If you have 7 loads of laundry every week then try to do one load every day first thing in the morning. You can also put the load in the machine in the morning and when you get home just turn it on.
Don’t try to be a perfectionist
If your house is relatively clean and tidy be happy. Don’t try to make everything perfect. Be happy if 80% of the cleaning is done. Deep cleaning can be done of weekends.
Prioritize what needs to be done and make a list of what you would like to get done. Write down your cleaning goals and stick with these. Making a list really helps although most people hate writing out lists.
Get the Whole Family Involved
It is often actually easier to just do the job yourself, but if you involve other family members it will be better in the long run. Give simple tasks to children like putting their clothes and shoes away, cleaning their room, etc. In the overall tidiness of the house it will make a big difference.
Do a 15 Minute Clean-up before going to bed
Make it a habit to do a 15 minute nightly clean-up. Involve other family members. Just stick with the top cleaning priorities.
Always Keep Basic Cleaning Supplies Where You Use Them
Cleaning tools and supplies that you use to clean the bathroom can be stocked there itself. This will make it so much quicker and easier to give the toilet a quick wipe or swipe.
Never Leave a Room Empty Handed
In the general tidiness of your home this is one habit that can make a huge difference. Try to do a quick scan as you move from one room to another to see if there is anything that you can take with you that belongs where you are going. It can be some laundry that needs to be put away or a couple of dirty dishes.
Taking the time to organize and declutter your home will drastically cut down on the amount of time needed to clean. To make it much easier to tidy up have a spot for everything. Dusting will be easy if there are lesser items out on the surface tops and counters.
Know Your High Traffic Areas
On a daily basis focus on keeping the high traffic areas clean. To prevent the spread of dust and dirt throughout the rest of the house this will really help. At the entrances to your house make sure you have a dedicated spot for shoes and remind everyone to take off their shoes and keep in one spot. A lot of incoming dirt can be trapped using small area rugs at doors. Keep an old towel by the door for your furry friends so that they can quickly wipe down paws as they come in. Daily vacuum or sweep these areas. It will not take more than 5 minutes daily.
Clean as You Go
This is something we often don’t do. It will definitely make a difference if you put things away as you go. Instead of piling up the dishes wash them before you go to bed. After dinner have all the family help out cleaning up the kitchen. With a little planning these little things can be made into habits and you can always have a clean house.
